San Lorenzo Valley Water District hires interim general manager
John Kunkel has been hired as interim general manager of the San Lorenzo Valley Water District, its board of directors announced Friday. Kunkel was most recently interim city manager of Huron in Fresno County. He’s a former police chief who has held city manager roles in several communities.
San Lorenzo Park Riverlands closed to public over habitat concerns
The San Lorenzo Park Riverlands will be closed to the public “until further notice” as the City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation department seeks to “avoid disturbances to native plant species and sensitive habitats.” Work will start Monday on vegetation management in the area also known as the Benchlands “to prepare for the upcoming rainy season.”
Highway 9 to close in both directions next week for winter prep
A stretch of Highway 9 in Felton will be closed during the day in both directions Monday through Friday, Oct. 21 through 25. The closure will run from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. from 1 mile north of Highway 9’s junction with Highway 1 to Glengarry Road in Felton, in the area of Paradise Park and Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.
Nominations sought for Santa Cruz County bike safety awards
Bike Santa Cruz County is accepting nominations for its “Wheelie Awards,” which will recognize efforts to improve the safety and awareness of cycling in Santa Cruz County. Winners will be announced at the organization’s annual “Wheels In Motion” celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at Woodhouse Brewing, which will also feature food, beverages, raffles, and live music.

Santa Cruz County under red flag warning Thursday night into Saturday; power shutoffs possible
The National Weather Service has expanded a red flag warning indicating critical fire weather conditions to include all of Santa Cruz County, beginning Thursday night and lasting through Saturday afternoon. With windy conditions forecast throughout Central and Northern California, Pacific Gas & Electric listed Santa Cruz County among areas for precautionary power shutoffs Friday and Saturday, with 132 customers possibly affected.
