Aptos students ‘shaken’ by head-on crash of school bus
A school bus carrying 43 students from Aptos High School and Aptos Junior High was struck head-on by a Kia Forte in Watsonville Tuesday morning, injurying a student and the driver of the Kia. Affected students are being offered counseling, according to an official with the Pajaro Valley Unified School District.

Overnight Highway 1 closures planned next week for ‘Whale Bridge’ work

The Homeless Garden Project in Santa Cruz has been selected to participate in the California Regional Initiative for Social Enterprise and will receive a $150,000 grant funded by the state through the California Office of the Small Business Advocate. It’s one of 61 grants awarded to organizations across the state.
Watsonville Interim City Manager Tamara Vides up for permanent job
The Watsonville City Council will vote Tuesday on naming Tamara Vides as city manager. Vides has worked for the city for three decades, the last 15 years in various positions in the City Manager’s Office, including being named deputy city manager in 2018 and assistant city manager in October 2020. She was named interim city manager in April. She similarly served in an interim role in 2021.
$1 million grant funds Santa Cruz County wildfire prevention work
The state of California will pay for nearly $1 million worth of work in Santa Cruz County aimed at wildfire prevention and harm reduction. It’s one of 94 wildfire mitigation projects Cal Fire is funding across the state, and will fund work on Soquel San Jose Road to reduce the amount of material that might fuel a wildfire.
