The Santa Cruz County Commission on the Environment is hosting another in a series of presentations on climate action on Wednesday, March 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. County staff will present the commission with a presentation on the county’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP).
CAAP aims to strengthen the Central Coast against the effects of climate change. Key objectives of the plan include reducing fossil fuel use in new and existing buildings and reducing car travel by building higher-density housing around transit corridors.
Central Coast Community Energy will also be present to provide information on battery energy storage systems (BESS) and their relationship to renewable energy. The topic is of special interest in the wake of the Moss Landing battery storage fire, which ignited public and civic interest in safer battery storage systems.
“The public needs to be informed regarding the relationship between Battery Energy Storage Systems, expanding our use of renewable energy sources, decarbonizing the grid by meeting our regional goal of 100 percent renewable electricity by 2035 and reducing the impacts to our regional grid from climate related disasters,” Commission on Environment Chair Kris Damhorst wrote in a news release.
The presentation will take place at the county governmental center, 701 Ocean St., fifth floor board chambers, Santa Cruz. A Zoom option is also available. Community members are welcome to attend.
