In a remarkable achievement, Five Branches University proudly commemorates its 40th anniversary as a trailblazer in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) education. Ron Zaidman and Joanna Zhao founded the institution in 1984, setting it on a course to lead and redefine the landscape of TCM practitioners’ education.
With a vision to deliver top-tier education in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Five Branches University initiated its first campus in Santa Cruz in February 1984. From the onset, the institution aimed to elevate TCM education standards by recruiting some of the most esteemed teachers and faculty in the field. A world-class admissions team was also assembled to guide students on their path to becoming Licensed Doctors of Acupuncture
and Herbal Medicine.
In 2005, a significant expansion unfolded as Five Branches University inaugurated its second campus in San Jose, initially situated on Santana Row and later relocating to the current Lundy Avenue location to meet the escalating demand for more space. This expansion facilitated diversification in degree offerings, including the introduction of a groundbreaking Postgraduate Doctorate Degree. This prestigious degree marked a significant milestone, granting graduates the title of Doctor for the first time, opening avenues for advanced practice, research, and teaching.

Five Branches University forged a strategic partnership with Sutter Health, enabling students to engage in residencies at Bay Area hospitals. This hands-on experience in a hospital setting provides invaluable insights into the practical applications of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Alongside longstanding externships in Asian countries such as China and Vietnam, this initiative offers students a comprehensive and global perspective on TCM and its diverse applications.
Ron Zaidman, the CEO and President, emphasized the institution’s commitment to playing a pivotal role in influencing healthcare and education policies and inspiring the next generation of Doctors of Traditional Chinese Medicine. “Our graduates are well-equipped to meet the evolving challenges of the healthcare landscape through our strategic partnerships, innovative programs, and global experiences,” stated Zaidman.
As Five Branches University reaches this significant 40-year milestone, it reflects not only on its rich history but also on its steadfast dedication to advancing the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The anniversary celebration serves as a testament to the institution’s resilience, innovation, and enduring commitment to shaping the future of healthcare and Traditional Chinese Medicine education.
