The Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has confirmed that the body recovered near Davenport in late December is Erica Fox, 55, of Monterey County. It also determined that her cause of death was “sharp and blunt force injuries” and submersion in water due to a shark attack.

Crews recovered the body near Red, White and Blue Beach about 4 miles south of Davenport on Dec. 27 after a witness reported seeing it that morning. Fox’s husband and father confirmed later that weekend that it was Fox, according to a NBC Bay Area report. She had been missing for a week following a suspected shark attack.

Fox’s husband, Jean-Francois Vanreusel, was only a short distance behind her in the water when a shark breached and Fox disappeared. He told the Bay Area News Group that law enforcement informed him that her body was identified by her watch and the shark band on her ankle, an electromagnetic device meant to fend off sharks.
