Karen Delaney, executive director of the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County, is retiring from her position after a 40-year career.
Under Delaney’s leadership, the Volunteer Center transformed from a grassroots organization to one of the largest such centers in the nation, currently managing 19 programs, including the mental health and restorative justice divisions.
Delaney’s work for the Volunteer Center involved growing the organization to support 19 robust programs that now include 15,000 volunteers and more than 300 nonprofit and agency partners annually.
The board of directors has promoted Shawn Peterson to director of operations and impact following an 18-month strategic planning process in anticipation of Delaney’s retirement.
Delaney is considered a pioneer within the local nonprofit sector, with her early work as co-founder of organizations such as Save Our Shores and the Human Care Alliance.
