Black lives matter – in triumph and in tragedy. Lookout’s piece on the Black activist setting himself on fire on MLK Day is a tragedy, and my heart goes out to him, his family, friends and supporters.

Whatever his reasons, our entire community needs to know of this tragedy, and for the entire community to support him and them in his recovery however we can. To not report on this could be construed as ignoring what happens to people of color, something that has occurred far too often in this country.

His life and all Black lives have to matter to everyone if we are to continue healing racial divides. I’ll look to leaders of our Black community on how we can support this young man and his family. Lastly, in these fractured times of distrust of institutions and fear for peoples’ safety, I’m thankful to live in a community that has a free press and takes their obligation to our entire community seriously.
