Last week, a thread on Nextdoor started by Eric Heagan recounts his serious concerns about the illegal encampments, fires, drugs and trash he observed throughout the Pogonip trails. His remarks and many others’ were serious and thoughtful. It was suggested that we contact the head of the parks department, the police department and perhaps the fire department.

Clearly it seems that homelessness is a serious problem, but it seems also that the issues raised here go beyond housing people: The drug use and resultant lawlessness are frankly terrifying.

It was commented that there has been local reporting on this subject several years ago. If anything, responders felt the situation was worse.

Yes, the county just went through a harrowing budget cycle, but do we have (too many?) really ineffective housing organizations? Further, surely as a society we are not required to accept camping in trash and drugs among people who choose not to accept community services?

Perhaps trying another run at this could possibly start making a difference this time?
