Santa Cruz County is once again the nation’s least affordable rental market, Max Chun reports following the release of an annual study by a national housing nonprofit. Renters would have to earn $81.21 an hour to afford fair market rent – the equivalent of having five jobs for someone earning minimum wage.
Hillary Ojeda was on hand Wednesday night as Pajaro Valley Unified School District’s governing board voted to renew a controversial program placing law enforcement officers in the district’s three high schools. The meeting’s tone was heated, with many comments relating to racism.
Wednesday’s raid on an illegal cannabis operation outside Watsonville triggered a big response from locals and volunteers with a grassroots network dedicated to monitoring and informing the community about immigration enforcement activities, Tania Ortiz reports. “People are rightfully afraid, and so they spread information on social media,” one volunteer said. “It’s really difficult to confirm what’s actually happening.”
The Wharf to Wharf road race has been a local staple for decades, but it’s breaking new ground this year after being detoured due to the ongoing Murray Street Bridge retrofit, Wallace Baine reports. “Operationally, it’s been a lot to figure out,” one organizer said. “We’re hopeful that, although it’s a significant rerouting and starting-line change, that it’ll still be the Wharf to Wharf in every other capacity.”
