Good morning. It is Tuesday, Jan. 23, and the forecast calls for a partly sunny day for Santa Cruz County, with temperatures in the 50s, before chances of rain return overnight and through Wednesday. And while it’s still a week or more out, meteorologists are seeing another big rainmaker ahead.

Lookout hosted the first of our three election forums Monday night, hearing from county supervisor candidates for Districts 2 and 5 on issues stemming from housing affordability and mental health services to fixing county roads, reforming the county planning commission and helping CZU fire survivors rebuild.

About 100 attendees got to hear from the candidates in person. Another 40 tuned into our Facebook Live feed.

Community Voices editor Jody K. Biehl kicked off the forum with a discussion among District 2 candidates Kristen Brown, Tony Crane, Kim De Serpa, Bruce Jaffe and David Schwartz. Politics and policy correspondent Christopher Neely led the second half of the event, with lively debate among District 5 candidates Theresa Ann Bond, Christopher Bradford, Tom Decker and Monica Martinez.

Max Chun has the highlights from the evening below. For those who missed it, we will be posting a recording of the event later this week. You can also check out Lookout’s Facebook page for a replay of our livestreams.

We thank our event partner, Hotel Paradox, for hosting the event. Please save the dates for the next two candidate forums. On Feb. 5, we’ll hear from District 1 county supervisor candidates and Measure M advocates and opponents. On Feb. 8, we’ll moderate a forum with Santa Cruz City Council candidates in Districts 1, 2, 3 and 5.

Make sure to learn more and RSVP for the next upcoming election forums.

If you can’t make our next forums in person, but you still want to tune in, we’ll be streaming the event on Facebook Live. Have questions for the candidates? Send them to news@lookoutlocal.com with the subject “candidate question.”

And be sure to check out our voter guide and campaign blog – and all of our Election 2024 coverage.
