Tree-huggers rejoice: New documentary celebrates the majesty of the coast redwood

“Giants Rising” is a new documentary about the ecological, cultural and historical significance of the majestic coast redwood. Locals will find particular significance in the story of the recovery of Big Basin Redwoods State Park after the CZU fires. It screens Monday at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz. The ultimate goodbye: My young grandson paddled out to release my husband’s ashes in the Pacific

Lookout columnist Claudia Sternbach continues to chronicle her grief as she comes to terms with her new life after the sudden death of her husband, Michael, after 40 years of marriage. Last week, her daughter, 10-year-old grandson and a cadre of friends released Michael’s ashes into the Pacific. Sternbach isn’t a swimmer. She watched with fear and pride and disbelief from the sand.
