Not that anyone is keeping score, but in downtown Santa Cruz, in recent weeks, we’ve lost, lessee … New Leaf, Flower Bar, Forever 21, O’Neill’s, Alderwood and Rip Curl. Little wonder everyone is spooked wondering who’s next.

Jazz piano master Kenny Barron, a man whose musical genealogy reaches back to Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz and Stanley Turrentine, is set to perform live at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center on April 14. Also due at the Kuumbwa, the Japanese-born musical explorer Hiromi (April 21), the Brazilian star Eliane Elias (June 17) and gifted singer, composer and arranger Nnenna Freelon (April 28). Moe’s Alley is hosting the reggae great Don Carlos on consecutive nights March 28 and 29. And everyone’s favorite Man Yelling at Clouds, the incomparable Lewis Black, has moved his show at the Rio, from this Friday to Aug. 17.

Kuumbwa Jazz making ambitious plans for 50th birthday celebration
The Kuumbwa Jazz Center is marking its 50th anniversary with a number of events, including a “Spirit of ’75” concert series, a big free outdoor show in the spring and a collection of archival and behind-the-scenes photos.
