Hi friends,

Forgive the abbreviated newsletter this week while I’m still away from my desk. We return to our regularly scheduled programming next week.

Now, on with the show.

The Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival will take over the Rio for three days, Feb. 28-March 2. The Gaelic supergroup Daimh (that’s pronounced “Dive”) comes to the Kuumbwa Jazz Center on Oct. 11. The very next night, Oct. 12, the Sin Sisters Burlesque present their Halloween-themed show at the Kuumbwa. And Santa Cruz graphic artist Harrison Howard comes to Bookshop Santa Cruz on Oct. 27 to discuss his new book and the satisfying pastime of drawing natural landscapes with pen and ink.

Be sure to check out Lookout’s carefully curated and constantly updated planning guide, Down the Line, for the staggering riches and amazing choices awaiting Santa Cruz audiences. It’s our look ahead at the best shows, concerts and events through the rest of the year at clubs, stages and venues all over the county.

Here they are, nine necessary know-abouts for the week ahead. It’s the equinox B9:

  1. It’s a new season for the Santa Cruz Symphony, kicking off 2024-25 with a taste of classical (Brahms) and a spoonful of contemporary (Mason Bates, Martin Gaskell).
  2. If you dig the Hammond B-3, there’s a new sensation prowling the touring circuit. Treat yourself to the funky and cool Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio
  3. Just in case you need an excuse to visit beautiful Bonny Doon, there’s plenty of art, beer, wine, food and dancing to enjoy Saturday, all to raise money for Bonny Doon Elementary School.
  4. Climate Fest 2024 is dedicated to one idea, that you and I can and must make a difference in taking action to mitigate climate change.
  5. Back in the 1980s, you couldn’t find too many pop bands with more energy and smarts than Australia’s Hoodoo Gurus (especially their “Mars Needs Guitars!” album).
  6. He’s one of the all-time greats of Brazilian pop, with a legacy for blending styles from bossa nova to psychedelic rock to create a unique voice. Yep, Marcos Valle is coming to the Rio.
  7. Aspiring rock stars take note: Singer-songwriter Ricky Montgomery colonized TikTok with his tasty, often funny songs, and now he’s a touring sensation.
  8. It’s Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s fall production, and they need lots of gentleman callers (and ladies too) to check out “The Glass Menagerie.”
  9. British-born James Hunter has an uncanny feel and obvious love for the old-school R&B from the 1950s, in both his soulful singing and snappy guitar playing.
