Prescribed burns to reduce fuel loads are scheduled at three California state parks in Santa Cruz County later this month.
California State Parks will be burning brush piles created by park volunteers in Big Basin Redwoods and Henry Cowell Redwoods State Parks. Officials said 52 piles will be burned throughout the Redwood Loop Trail in Big Basin this coming Saturday, Jan. 17, and approximately 80 piles will be burned Jan. 31 along the Redwood Grove Trail at Henry Cowell.
Ignitions are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. for both burns.
No trails will be closed, and additional guides will be available to explain what’s happening to visitors.
California State Parks crews are also planning a prescribed burn in the northeast corner of the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park in mid-January to early February.
Smoke may be visible in the vicinity of the parks during the burns. Monitoring and patrol will occur throughout all burns and extend into the evening and weekend as required.
These pile burns and prescribed burns depend on dry weather and conditions that facilitate smoke dispersal.
