Walk-in campsites are now available this summer at Rancho del Oso, the coastal unit of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, offering a rare opportunity for non-equestrian campers to experience the area while trails continue to recover from damage from 2020’s CZU Lightning Complex fire.
The temporary campground, located at the rehabilitated horse camp just off of Highway 1 near the Santa Cruz County-San Mateo County border, includes five reservable walk-in sites and one shared, non-reserved bike-in site.
Rancho del Oso also features the open Marsh Trail, where visitors can expect to see rabbits, dragonflies and songbirds in the area around Waddell Creek.
The nearby Skyline to Sea Trail remains closed, but Waddell Beach across the highway remains a popular destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
The campground will return to equestrian use once trail restoration is complete.
