With more than 42,000 physicians and medical student members, DFA is a national nonprofit that advocates for policies that improve the health of patients and communities. Its goal is to expand access to affordable care, strengthen community health and prevention efforts, and advance health justice and equity.

Gordon founded two free community clinics, created two hospital-based transitional care units, and practiced family medicine in San Diego for 35 years before retiring to Santa Cruz.

While earning his master’s degree in public health at Tulane University, Gordon helped desegregate Louisiana’s illegally segregated blood banking system and provided volunteer medical care in the New Orleans Parish prison, contributing to a federal court ruling that found conditions there unconstitutional.

Gordon served eight years on the Medical Board of California, licensing and disciplining physicians and other health professions, and currently focuses his advocacy on preventing child abuse and neglect, serving on the California Citizens Review Panel for Critical Incidents (child fatalities due to abuse or neglect). He has written several op-eds for Lookout’s Community Voices opinion section.
