Health officials in Santa Cruz County and across the San Francisco Bay Area are encouraging people to get updated vaccines as we head into flu and COVID season.
The updated flu and COVID vaccines are now available in pharmacies and health care provider offices throughout the state. Health officials recommend that everyone 6 months and older receive an updated flu vaccine each year.
The COVID vaccine is particularly recommended for older adults, pregnant people, infants and toddlers, and anyone else at risk for serious disease.
“Getting vaccinated against flu and COVID isn’t just caring for your health,” Santa Cruz County Public Health Officer Dr. Lisa Hernandez said in a news release. “You’re also helping to safeguard your family, friends and the most vulnerable members of your community.”
Residents can get the updated vaccines at their regular health care provider or a pharmacy covered by their insurance. Despite recent federal changes – the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s decision not to recommend COVID-19 vaccines for everyone and instead require those who want one to consult with a health care provider – the updated fall 2025 COVID shot is still free or low-cost for people who live in California and have health insurance regulated by this state. The same goes for the annual flu shot.
Local health officials say they support California’s recommendations on exactly who needs vaccination to protect against respiratory viruses. Health officers also recommend that you stay home if you’re sick, consider wearing a mask in indoor public places, wash your hands, and to cover your cough or sneeze.
