Quick Take

Rain is expected to roll into Santa Cruz County on Saturday night and linger into the following Friday, with the majority of the rainfall coming between Saturday night and Wednesday morning. National Weather Service meteorologists do not anticipate having to issue any flood advisories or watches.

Santa Cruz County is in for a wet week following Valentine’s Day, with rain likely to arrive in the region Saturday night and linger through the entire following week.

National Weather Service meteorologist Roger Gass told Lookout on Friday that the agency anticipates rain to begin around 10 p.m. Saturday. He added that most of the rain is likely to fall between then and Tuesday.

“There will be several rounds of rain, but rain on Wednesday through Friday will be on the fairly light side,” he said. In total, the agency expects lower county elevations to receive between 3½ and 5½ inches of rain from Saturday night through Tuesday, and higher county elevations could receive up to 7.

Gass said winds are not likely to be particularly strong, but that the agency could issue a wind advisory on Monday going into Tuesday, if needed. He said that there are currently no plans to issue any flood advisories, warnings or watches, but that minor urban flooding is possible.

“Even when the storm surge is at its highest, it doesn’t reach coastal flood criteria,” he said. “And most of the larger streams, including the San Lorenzo River, have the capacity to hold all this water.”
