Quick Take:
A Watsonville man killed by debris washed up by storm at local beach has been identified as David Koons.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office has identified the Watsonville man killed after he was pinned underneath debris at a local beach during last Monday’s big swell.
Sheriff’s spokesperson Ashley Keehn said 64-year-old David Koons of Watsonville was trapped by debris that was washed up from a large wave at Sunset State Beach around 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 23. Koons was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
He was the only reported fatality from damaging swells that hit Santa Cruz County last Monday, bringing 25-foot waves that tore off a section of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf and prompted several water rescues.
