This Earth Day – Tuesday, April 22 – the Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District is celebrating with free fares. Across Santa Cruz County, all riders can enjoy free Metro transportation on all fixed-route, ParaCruz and Highway 17 Express services.

“Earth Day serves as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to protect and preserve our planet. At Metro, sustainability is at the heart of our mission, and we are proud to provide environmentally friendly transportation options that reduce carbon emissions and foster a healthier future,” said CEO Corey Aldridge. “Offering free fares on Earth Day is our way of encouraging the community to embrace sustainable travel and join us in our commitment to protecting our environment for generations to come.”

Metro will also be participating in Earth Day events in Santa Cruz and Watsonville; Santa Cruz’s gathering happens downtown on Saturday, April 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., while Watsonville’s festival is Sunday, April 27, from noon to 3 p.m. on the downtown plaza.

Since January 2023, Metro has been protecting Santa Cruz’s environment through its One Ride at a Time program. Through the program, every ride on a Metro bus results in a donation to local environmental nonprofits, thanks to the GO Santa Cruz ridesharing incentive program. To participate, riders simply need to log 25 rides to make a $10 donation to either the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Foundation or the Bay of Life Fund.
