Santa Cruz County’s nonprofit safety net is being stretched to the breaking point.

Across our county, nearly every nonprofit is facing unprecedented challenges—historic budget cuts, rising costs, and an increased demand for services. Organizations that provide food, housing, education, mental health support, and community connection are being pushed to do more with less, just as more people than ever need help.

At the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County, we’re feeling the impact too. We’re facing a $300,000 shortfall that puts critical programs at risk—including safety services for seniors, reentry support for women involved in the justice system, youth and adult literacy programs, and our countywide volunteer coordination network – which supports over 300 local agencies! If we don’t close this gap by April 30, these essential services could disappear.

That’s why this month, we’re asking you to take action—by giving your time, your voice, or your dollars—and to do it now. When you support the Volunteer Center, you’re not just helping one organization—you’re fueling a community-wide movement for connection, care, and resilience.

Programs like YouthSERVE empower young people to take action and build a better future—for their community and for themselves. But with rising costs and major funding cuts, these opportunities are at risk. Your donation today helps keep youth programs like this alive and thriving.
