A 44-year-old Aptos man died in a single-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 1 on Sunday night after crashing into a dirt embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At about 11:50 p.m., officers responded to the crash on the freeway just north of Buena Vista Drive.

The victim was driving a white 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser without a seatbelt at an undetermined speed, officers said, when for an unknown reason, the car left the roadway and crashed into an embankment. The driver was ejected from the car and sustained major injuries from the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP is still investigating the crash and officers believe alcohol could have been a factor. Investigators are withholding the driver’s identity pending notification to his next of kin.
