The Santa Cruz Police Department has made an arrest in a hit-and-run that police allege occurred in downtown Santa Cruz near the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Laurel Street on Saturday night.

SCPD Deputy Chief Jon Bush told Lookout on Monday that a car hit a pedestrian near the intersection, and the vehicle quickly fled the scene. However, the driver came to the police department the following morning and turned herself in.

Harshitha Kuchibhotla, 20, of San Jose, was charged with felony hit-and-run. Bush said that drugs or alcohol are “obviously a suspicion,” but because Kuchibhotla fled the scene at the time of the accident, officers do not currently know if she was under the influence at the time.

Bush said that the victim sustained “significant injuries” and was transported to a county trauma center following the accident. They underwent surgery on Saturday night, and are currently in stable condition.
