Central Fire District Captain Steve Ramirez brought joy and compassion to a demanding profession
Central Fire District Captain Steve Ramirez died unexpectedly this weekend while on duty at his station. The 54-year-old served with the district for 24 years, and is remembered for an upbeat, joyous personality that lifted his colleagues up during even the most difficult circumstances, and as a man who loved his family and friends more than anything.
Linda’s Seabreeze Café: A Santa Cruz legend, and a cinnamon roll to live for
Adriana Owsley, who worked at the legendary Linda’s Seabreeze Café for 28 years, offers up a tribute to the little Seabright restaurant and to the kind-hearted ownership style of Tex and Claire Hintze, who recently sold the cafe to veteran restauranteurs Marcie Bei Magdaleno and her husband, Mark Magdaleno. Skills of Life Café empowers young people with special needs who ‘fall between the cracks’ with job training, personal skills
Occupational therapist Molly Turner founded Skills of Life Café to help individuals with special needs get job training. Located at Simpkins Family Swim Center in Live Oak, the coffee cart, which operates as a nonprofit, offers job training to neurodivergent teens and young people with conditions like autism and Down syndrome, with a focus on developing soft skills like organization and time management.

‘We’re drowning’: Dominican nurses raise alarms over staffing, patient care
