Motorists will experience overnight delays of up to 10 minutes on a section of Highway 1 in Santa Cruz on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 3-5, as work continues on a new pedestrian bridge. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., a single lane of both northbound and southbound Highway 1 will be closed between 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive.
Granite Construction of Watsonville is working on a $29 million project to construct north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements on Highway 1 between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive interchanges and to build the new bicycle and pedestrian bridge at Chanticleer Avenue.
According to a release from the California Department of Transportation, “the auxiliary lanes will connect on-ramps with the next off-ramp, thereby extending the weaving and merging distance between the ramps, improving traffic operations and reducing cut-through traffic diverting to local streets and neighborhoods.”
The new bridge will provide an alternative route for bicyclists and pedestrians currently using the Soquel Drive or 41st Avenue interchanges to cross over Highway 1. It will be lighted, 12 to 14 feet wide, and will incorporate public art and other elements “consistent with the visual character of the corridor and the adjacent community.”
