When I reflect on the recent release of the figure of over $4 billion to complete the rail trail between Watsonville and Santa Cruz, it seems wise to finally give some serious consideration to alternatives.
Personal rapid transit (PRT) (Google it – I’m allowed only a short letter) is far less expensive and just as capable of delivering the same service of transporting people.
Additionally, a PRT route from the Boardwalk parking lot along the levee, through the Metro Center and up to UC Santa Cruz through the Pogonip would solve the “ train to nowhere” complaint regarding the rail line not connecting to downtown or the university.
Bus-favoring opponents of PRT should realize that the bus system would be enhanced by such a system – buses feeding the PRT would increase bus ridership, not lessen it.
Let’s get moving on a more modern, solar-powered and less expensive transportation system for our county.
