Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley isn’t shy about his preference for pot, readily offering that, “I consume, and have, as an adult, for a long time.”
While my opinion on this issue is not important, I am concerned about Mayor Keeley’s use. It is difficult to make decisions while under the influence of marijuana. Getting “locked up,” and trying to choose even the simplest of things can be daunting to people who are high. It also causes impulsivity, and some emotional issues. I would surmise the response would be, “I never use it when I am working,” but the long-term changes to brain physiology are well documented.
Having someone running a city of almost 70,000 people who regularly consumes what is technically still an illegal substance (at the federal level) is concerning to me. Taking CBDs for pain is one thing. Smoking or THC edibles is an entirely different world.
