The Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History has named longtime curator Ginger Shulick Porcella as the museum’s executive director.
Porcella was one of two finalists presented by the MAH to the public in November, along with Las Vegas artist and writer Laura Henkel.

Among Porcella’s experience in the world of museum curation and administration was roles as executive director at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tucson, Arizona, the Institute of Contemporary Art in San Diego, the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, and the Franconia Sculpture Park in Minnesota, where she established the 4Ground Biennial, a Midwest-based festival focused on site-specific land art in collaboration with local native tribal organizations.
Porcella holds an master’s degree in socio-cultural anthropology from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in art history from DePaul University. Her interests as an artist and curator have included new media, technology, architecture, feminism, LGBTQ rights, gender and spirituality.
She replaces Robb Woulfe, who guided the MAH through the pandemic but resigned his position in May. Longtime MAH staffer Marla Novo has been serving as interim executive director. Porcella will begin her new position Jan. 6.
