Roadwork is affecting traffic in the region

  • A big rig crashed around 3:17 a.m. today at the intersection of Highway 1 South and Park. The truck went through a barrier and a fence onto the frontage road. No one was hurt, but about 60-80 feet of chain-linked fence was damaged. Roads were closed and traffic was controlled while the vehicle was recovered and the area was cleaned up.

  • There is a one-way traffic closure on South Highway 9 at Lorenzo Avenue in San Lorenzo Valley because of emergency work. This closure will last until April 1.

Property code violations

County officials cite property owners for issues such as substandard housing, illegal uses of buildings, property maintenance, abandoned appliances or furniture, construction without permits, and other issues that affect public safety and quality of life.

  • A code violation notice has been issued for the property at 611 Center St., Capitola, CA 95010, under case number NV25333. According to the “CODE COMPLIANCE CASE(S)” section, the violation involves unpermitted grading on a vacant lot, with the activity potentially occurring near a swale, which is an ephemeral watercourse. This means that earth-moving work was conducted without the necessary permits, and the proximity to a natural drainage feature raises further environmental and regulatory concerns. The case reached the “Notice and Order” milestone on 01/13/2026, marking the initiation of formal enforcement action by local authorities.

New local businesses

  • A new business named FAIRYTALE ENDINGS ENTERTAINMENT was registered at 3008 Mcglenn Dr, Aptos CA 95003 on January 9. The business was registered by Shannon Marie Mcdonough as an individual business.

Restaurant inspections

County officials regularly inspect food facilities to ensure compliance with state laws. Here, Lookout Santa Cruz reports both those who have passed the inspections and those that the county deems to have a “major” issue. The county’s full ongoing report can be accessed here.

  • Cafe Cruz at 2621 41st Ave., Soquel, passed a county health inspection on January 12 with no critical issues.
