The City of Santa Cruz has lowered the flags at City Hall in remembrance of local activist and former Santa Cruz mayor Mike Rotkin.
A UC Santa Cruz graduate and lecturer and prominent progressive figure in the area, Rotkin spent 25 years on the city council and served as mayor of Santa Cruz five times.
Rotkin died Wednesday at the age of 79.
“Former Mayor Mike Rotkin was at the center of every important decision in Santa Cruz over the last four decades,” Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley wrote in a news release. “His valued-based advocacy for those less fortunate, and for community-based policy developments are now models for current and future elected officials. Our community is so much better because of Mike’s public service; and, sadder today because of his passing.”
In honor of Rotkin’s legacy and local impact, Lookout invites readers to share their experiences with him. For more information on where to send your tributes and memories, see here.
