Quick Take

Seaside-based Other Brother Beer Co. has signed a lease on the former Doon To Earth tasting room space on Parade Street in Aptos Village. The five co-owners plan to open a satellite taproom, with food and events, in late 2025.

Five-year-old Seaside brewery Other Brother Beer Co. is making its way north with plans to open a satellite location in Aptos Village in late 2025.

The company recently signed a lease for the former Doon To Earth tasting room space at 10 Parade St. in Aptos Village. The cozy, 1,400-square-foot space will have a small kitchen, beer from Other Brother as well as wine and hard cider, with indoor seating and an outdoor patio.

This new location is smaller than Other Brother’s brewery, taproom and restaurant on Broadway Avenue in Seaside, but the owners say they hope to create a similar art-filled and community-driven atmosphere, with substantial small plates that can fill the bellies of hikers and bikers stopping in after a visit to the nearby Forest of Nisene Marks State Park. “The smaller space will allow us to focus more on the details and create a warm, comfortable, community-centric environment with the same yummy stuff we’re known for in Seaside,” said co-owner Evan Loewy.

Loewy, the brewery’s creative and brand manager, owns Other Brother with four business partners: head brewer Kevin Brown, director of operations Justin DiMauro, Andy Pitts and Michael Nevares. All based in Monterey County and the Seaside area, the five owners were friends before they launched Other Brother in 2019 and helped revitalize the neighborhood, along with the Michelin-listed restaurant Maligne.

The brewery produces true-to-style ales and lagers, including West Coast and hazy IPAs, pilsner and fruit-infused sour ales. Loewy describes Other Brother as “design-focused,” and said that Other Brother takes pride in the art that it features in the taproom, and on its cans and merchandise, frequently working with artists in the skateboarding community.

The owners chose Aptos Village because of its proximity to “like-minded” food businesses including Mentone, The Penny Ice Creamery, The Parish Publick House, Betty Burgers and Cat & Cloud Coffee, their direct neighbor, said Loewy. Its proximity to the original brewery – the two locations are 30 miles apart – will allow for ease of operations, he said.

“Connection to our community is super important. Thinking about operations, we wanted something close to the home base,” said Loewy. His friendship with Cat & Cloud co-owner Chris Baca through a shared love of skateboarding was also a motivator: “Knowing who Cat & Cloud are and what they stand for, being able to be next to our pals was a pretty big driver, as well as Penny, Mentone and the rest.”

Like at its Seaside location, Other Brother plans to host events in Aptos as well. “Events, pop-ups and markets have helped us build community and are part of our ethos at this point. We have the go-ahead from our landlord, so it’ll be part of our plan,” said Loewy.

After completing the permitting process with Santa Cruz County, the owners plan to start construction in the spring and aim to open by late summer next year.
