With the weekend nearly here, get your B9 shot in the form of Baine’s Nine, Wallace Baine’s recommendations for things to do around Santa Cruz County via Lookout's BOLO events calendar.

Here they are, nine necessary know-abouts for the week ahead. It’s the summer-warmup B9:

  1. Studies show what dads enjoy most is (1) overstuffed chairs, (2) cold beverages and (3) riding in trains. Check off boxes 2 and 3 at Roaring Camp this weekend.
  2. Free Movies on the Beach begin this week with — what else could it be? — the 1987 classic “The Lost Boys.”
  3. He didn’t write “Mr. Tambourine Man,” but he did write “I Wrote Mr. Tambourine Man.” Discover the brilliance of troubadour John Craigie.
  4. A full day of celebration and fellowship marks the traditional Juneteenth observance in downtown Santa Cruz.
  5. Gondwana was an immense land mass that used to … oh, that Gondwana. That’s, of course, the great Chilean reggae band with tasty beats and even sweeter vibes.
  6. Emerging from Jazz at Lincoln Center, young vocalist Ekep Nkwelle has a bright future, which we hope includes many performances at Kuumbwa.
  7. As a principal innovator at Google, Frederik Pferdt figured out some things about how to embrace the future. Maybe we should listen to him. 
  8. Paula Poundstone once told me, “I do own 16 cats. At least I don’t have to waste time on the internet watching cute cat videos.” 
  9. There is one inflation-proof thing in this world: The People’s Disco is always free.
