Capitola Police Department officers and crews from the Central Fire District of Cruz County responded to a fire at an apartment building on 45th Avenue on Saturday night that injured one.
Capitola police and residents deployed fire extinguishers to minimize the flames from spreading until Central Fire arrived to extinguish the blaze. One resident of the building was treated for burns and transported to a nearby medical center. The victim was in stable condition, the Capitola Police Department said on social media.
First responders rescued four snakes and one cat; two other cats died in the fire. Central Fire is conducting an investigation but had not found anything suspicious or criminal regarding the cause of the fire, per the statement.
