A July 27 Lookout op-ed advocated removing the bollards protecting the bike lanes on Soquel Avenue because some of them are damaged, and are thus a danger to cyclists. Perhaps this is the perspective of the“casual bicyclist and an enthusiastic driver,” as the author identifies himself.
As all of us who bike all the time know, and as every major traffic safety study confirms, protected bike lanes are by far the safest for cyclists.
Soquel Avenue has long been one of the most dangerous places to ride in the county, and the newly protected bike lanes are a huge improvement. Yes, let’s keep them well maintained.
But let’s have more protected lanes, not fewer.
