I’m a parent to a student at Green Acres Elementary School, in Live Oak School District. On Wednesday night I attended the district’s board meeting, which lasted almost 3½ hours. As you know, a layoff vote was postponed and there will be emergency board meetings to follow.

As a very involved parent, I volunteer at the school weekly in my student’s classroom and I also serve on the School Site Council and the Community Schools Advisory Council. This $2.9 million deficit has just come to my attention. I show up and I ask questions and send emails to the board and I’m now just finding out about the terrible state we are in.

The LOSD administration and board has grossly mismanaged the budget and has not been fiscally responsible or transparent about the problems they were facing.

Due to Superintendent Daisy Morales’ negligence, our wonderful teachers and students have been suffering and will continue to suffer due to the greed and selfishness this administration has participated in.

I and other parents demand justice. Dr. Morales should resign. Any leader who gravely mismanaged the district’s finances and purposefully has hidden the truth from the community they serve should not remain in their position.

Further, our school’s principal, Rebecca Dominguez, was recently moved to a different position, from principal at Green Acres to the special education curriculum planner for the district, which I was told included a $50,000 raise. We are in a transition period now and have a new principal, Marilyn Rockey, beginning March 1.

This change in leadership was barely communicated to parents. We learned of it this month and received no explanation.

Additionally, I just learned that the human resources director of the district, Heidi Odom, resigned Thursday morning

I plan to attend the Feb. 29 parent forum and all future board meetings, as long as we stay in the district. If proper actions aren’t taken, I’ll be left with no choice but to leave the district.

Thank you,

Brooke Bond
