I can’t believe Lookout faced a squeeze on reporting a heartbreaking and tragic act in the public square. What on earth? My heart is broken, and yes, we needed to know. We are living in a free press emergency, where the biggest stories of the day are being buried, and we cannot be part of it.

This is a big deal. It’s not private. Profoundly disturbing, of course. That is what the man intended, and that is part of the story.

It’s happening, acts like this, in small towns and big cities, and one day soon there’s going to be a bigger story about it.

I dare say the motives aren’t “unclear” as much as you tried to soften that blow. Is mental illness involved in painful suicide? That’s part of it. But the political circumstances are what force these plays, their timing. Self-immolation doesn’t happen in a vacuum, as you know. I appreciated the historical antecedents you quoted, and I woulda moved that up!
