Santa Cruz County’s coastline, including Natural Bridges State Beach, may gain federal protection for monarch butterflies, whose population has declined over 95% since the 198s. Public input on the proposal is open until March 12.

Roadwork is affecting traffic near you

  • There is a lane closure on North SR-1 due to bridge work.
     
  • North SR-17 at Ocean Street/Plymouth Street has alternating lane closures due to bridge work. The closure was reported today and is expected to end today.
     
  • Alternating lanes on South SR-17 are closed for bridge work. The closure is expected to end today.
     

Property development

  • A permit application has been filed for a residential expansion project at 124 Graham Hill Road, Santa Cruz. The proposal outlines plans to add approximately 880 square feet to the existing 2,420 square foot home, including a new bedroom and laundry room. To accommodate these additions, the project requests a variance to reduce the side yard setbacks from the standard 15 feet to about 10 feet on both the north and south sides of the property. Furthermore, the project seeks approval to increase the maximum lot coverage from the current 20% to approximately 22%. (view details)
     

Community crime report

  • A person was arrested for being publicly intoxicated due to drugs and behaving disorderly under the influence at 10 a.m. on December 10 near the 1100 block of Ocean St in Santa Cruz. (source)
     
  • A man was arrested for felony vandalism after causing damage worth $400 or more. He was also found with narcotics and drug paraphernalia. The incident occurred at 1 p.m. on December 9 near Effey Street and eastbound Seabright Avenue in Santa Cruz. (source)
     
  • A person was arrested for being under the influence of drugs and behaving disorderly in public around 12 p.m. on December 9 near the 1200 block of Soquel Avenue in Santa Cruz. (source)
     
  • A person was given a citation and released because they didn’t show up in court for having illegal paraphernalia. This happened at 11 a.m. on December 9 near the 500 Block of Seabright Avenue in Santa Cruz. (source)
     
  • There was an incident of vandalism where someone’s property was destroyed around 8 a.m. on December 9 near the 1500 block of Seabright Avenue in Santa Cruz. (source)
