It’s more dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians on Santa Cruz County roads than in most places in the state, and alcohol-related crashes are also more common here than almost anywhere, a new safety study finds. Local road safety advocates point to a combination of inadequate road and bike infrastructure, aggressive driving and a fast-growing population in a small area, Max Chun reports.
The dispute over mobile home parks encroaching on the Santa Cruz Branch Rail Line in Mid-County could be headed to a standoff between residents and the Regional Transportation Commission, Christopher Neely reports. The agency is planning to send out surveyors next week, but a number of residents say they’ll block access.
Christopher also has news on a bill put forward by Central Coast Assemblymember Gail Pellerin that aims to stop local governments from moving unhoused residents to other jurisdictions without coordination. The legislation is stalled amid concerns it could affect San Francisco’s busing programs, but Pellerin plans to amend and reintroduce it in 2026.
