Witnesses say Santa Cruz police officers used excessive force Wednesday morning when arresting a Black man on his bike. Deputy Chief Jon Bush said the department is investigating a community complaint it received about the incident.

Max Chun is the general-assignment correspondent at Lookout Santa Cruz. Max’s position has pulled him in many different directions, seeing him cover development, COVID, the opioid crisis, labor, courts and much more.Having grown up on the Westside and attended Santa Cruz High School, Max earned a bachelor’s degree in politics at Occidental College in Los Angeles in 2019. While there, he discovered an unexpected but welcome passion for journalism. While in college, he worked as part of the distribution team for the Culver City-based nonprofit documentary film company Brave New Films. During and after the pandemic, he worked at Verve Coffee Roasters’ Seabright location, blessing locals and tourists alike with top-tier latte art while getting his start in a professional journalism setting with Lookout.
Max joined Lookout in its early days and became our first home-grown local reporter more than a year ago. His community connections and savvy have served us as his hometown undergoes multifaceted change.

The Santa Cruz City Council voted against a one-way West Cliff Drive pilot project Tuesday, saying that the community and the council need more time before making a major decision on the matter. Councilmember Shebreh Kalantari-Johnson introduced a motion with alternative next steps, which passed unanimously.

Carmageddon: RTC eyes replacing 23 train bridges as it moves toward passenger rail in Santa Cruz County
Any manifestation of passenger rail in Santa Cruz County is still years away, but Regional Transportation Commission staff will get going on very early work this year. On Thursday, the commission voted to allow staff to begin preliminary designs and design repairs to existing Santa Cruz Branch Rail Line infrastructure — including the possible replacement of some historic bridges within the county.

Highway 1 closure in Capitola on for this weekend
Work originally scheduled to shut down Highway 1 in March is on track for this Saturday evening into Sunday evening, shutting down the freeway between the Park Avenue and Bay Avenue/Porter Street exits.
