Surgeons at Dignity Health Dominican Hospital in Live Oak performed the world’s first procedure combining an artificial talus bone with a total ankle replacement.

The surgery, performed by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Nicholas Abidi, used an implant made from polyetherketoneketone, a high-performance polymer known for its biocompatibility and infection resistance.

The implant is an alternative to metallic options traditionally used in ankle replacements. Hospital officials say the polymer implant offers a safer option to treat complex ankle injuries, giving patients better mobility and faster recovery.

Dignity Health, which runs Dominican Hospital, is a member of CommonSpirit Health, one of the country’s largest nonprofit Catholic health care organizations.
