Two people are dead after a head-on collision this past weekend between a Tesla and a Harley Davidson motorcycle on Highway 9.
California Highway Patrol said an 18-year-old San Jose woman was driving a Tesla Model 3 northbound on Highway 9 near the Summit around 4:47 p.m. on Saturday when the car collided with a Harley Davidson motorcycle that was heading south carrying a 61-year-old Ernest Latta Jr. and 59-year-old Lisa A. Latta from Hayward.
The two motorcycle riders flew off the vehicle in the collision, landing on the road. California Highway Patrol and Cal Fire responded to the crash, but both motorcycle riders were pronounced dead despite the efforts of medical personnel.
According to a California Highway Patrol press release on Sunday, both motorcyclists were wearing helmets, and the Tesla driver was wearing a seatbelt.
California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Israel Murillo told Lookout Monday that the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, and due to the nature of the accident, it will likely take weeks to determine the chain of events. Currently, no charges have been laid.
Investigators are still trying to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision. Murillo did not have information on whether one of the vehicles crossed over the center line.
California Highway Patrol declined to release the Tesla driver’s name.
