I was a supporter of Monica Martinez. I met with her and donated to her campaign. But, as I got to know her and her opponent for District 5 Santa Cruz County supervisor, Christopher Bradford, I changed my mind.
Why? He listens.
Martinez is District 5 representative of the County Parks Commission. She did not listen to Felton Grove neighbors, the Valley Women’s Club or the Felton Business Association, all of whom are concerned about putting an asphalt pump track in our local park. Instead, she listened to the parks director who said that deciding what goes in a park is “not a popularity contest.” She also listened to the constituents of a large nonprofit tasked with public outreach and promised the job of building the track once approved.
No matter your opinion on the pump track, this is an example of Monica not listening to local constituents.
In contrast, Bradford came to the neighborhood and listened to folks’ concerns about additional hardscape adding to flood risk. He deeply understands the frustrations that people in D5 have with county bureaucracy. He has locals foremost in his mind and heart, while Monica is part of the Democratic party machinery that has not served District 5 well.
