Hi friends,
As much as I’ve thundered against willful ignorance in Americans, sometimes I see its appeal. For example, I’ve just decided that I’m not going to learn who Sydney Sweeney is. I don’t want to know. Don’t try to educate me because I’m not listening. Lalalalalala (that’s me with my fingers in my ears).
Now, on with the show.
THIS JUST IN
On the eve of the 30th anniversary of the death of Jerry Garcia, the tribute band Jerry’s Middle Finger has announced back-to-back shows at Felton Music Hall on Halloween and All Saint’s Day (Oct. 31 and Nov. 1). Two-time Newbery Award-winning novelist Erin Entrada Kelly lands at Bookshop Santa Cruz on Sept. 17 to talk about her new book. Americana singer-songwriter Rhett Miller of the band Old 97’s plays live Oct. 21 at Moe’s Alley. And the astounding ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro lights up the Rio Theatre on Oct. 3.

The Jana Marcus touch

Our luminous friend and Lookout theater critic Jana Marcus has a side hustle — actually, it’s her main hustle. She’s a talented portrait photographer whose photos always contain a sense of humanity and a light dusting of magic. On Saturday, Aug. 16, Jana will be showcasing a number of her portraits at the Radius Gallery in a one-day show called “50 Over 40,” featuring 50 women displaying the radiance that only comes with a few years’ experience in this world. This free event takes place from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Radius (at the Tannery Arts Center). Hope to see you there.
