Paving will cause Highway 1 delays near Aptos
A 4-mile paving project will cause delays on Highway 1 in southern Santa Cruz County over the next three weeks. There will be overnight ramp and lane closures at various locations from about a mile north of the bridge at Buena Vista Drive in Watsonville to the bridge at Rio Del Mar Boulevard in Aptos.
Two-month full closure ahead for Bay Avenue on-ramp to Highway 1 in Capitola
As part of the auxiliary and bus-on-shoulder lane project that in April saw the demolition of the nearby Capitola Avenue overpass, the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission said in a news release Thursday that the on-ramp to southbound Highway 1 from Bay Avenue would close Sept. 29 for two months.
Full overnight closure of Highway 1 south starts Sunday, Sept. 22
Full overnight closures of southbound Highway 1 in Santa Cruz between Capitola and Aptos will take place on four nights Sunday through Thursday, Sept. 22-26, to accommodate work on north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements. Motorists will be detoured off Highway 1 southbound between Park Avenue and State Park Drive and should expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

For five consecutive nights beginning Sunday, Sept. 15, the left lane in both the north and southbound directions of Highway 1 between 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive in Santa Cruz will be closed. Northbound overnight lane closures will be in effect from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with southbound closures in effect 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. According to the California Department of Transportation, motorists should expect delays of up to 10 minutes.
Ironman 70.3 Santa Cruz triathlon draws 2,200 from 33 countries
More than 2,200 athletes from 33 countries and 41 U.S. states competed Saturday in the Ironman 70.3 Santa Cruz triathlon. Sebastian Radilla, representing Mexico, won the men’s competition with a finish time of 4:01:30, while Serena Xue, representing Canada, won the women’s race with a time of 4:47:22.

Motorists will experience overnight delays of up to 10 minutes on a section of Highway 1 in Santa Cruz Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 3-5, as work continues on a new pedestrian bridge. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., a single lane of both northbound and southbound Highway 1 will be closed between 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive.
