Two surfers were rescued Wednesday morning from rough waters at The Hook off the intersection of East Cliff Drive and 41st Avenue, one of whom was hospitalized.
Central Fire District Division Chief Patrick Winters told Lookout that department crews were dispatched just after 9 a.m. along with California State Parks lifeguards and Harbor Patrol. When crews arrived at the scene, Winters said they spotted one surfer in no apparent distress, who was able to get himself out of the water unharmed, but another who appeared to be struggling.
One rescue swimmer entered the water, but lost sight of the struggling surfer as the current was pushing him toward Capitola. Eventually, Winters said, additional units from Central Fire were able to find the surfer partially submerged, unconscious and not breathing. He appeared to have sustained a head injury near the rocks as well.
Winters said crews removed the surfer from the water and got him onto a Harbor Patrol boat to perform CPR. A Santa Cruz City Fire Department engine came to the Santa Cruz Harbor, where they picked up the surfer and transported him to Dominican Hospital. Winters said he did not know the surfer’s current condition.
There is a coastal flood advisory issued for Santa Cruz County through 2 p.m. Saturday and a beach hazards statement from 4 a.m. through 10 p.m. Thursday.
