Solar power is an energy source no one can hoard. Every daylight hour, we’re being bathed in free energy. We all deserve the opportunity to get power from the sunshine that falls on our roofs and balconies, whether we rent or own. Luckily, we live in a time when we have the technology to make that possible, and it’s becoming a cheaper alternative to oil, gas and coal at increasing rates around the world.
Donald Trump is foolishly taking funding away for solar and wind, leaving us at a competitive disadvantage with the rest of the world. But we still have solutions available to us at the state and local level, and it’s in our power to adopt those technologies for our homes and communities.
That’s why on Sunday, Sept. 21, a group of community groups, including Santa Cruz Climate Action Network, Indivisible Santa Cruz, Citizens Climate Lobby Santa Cruz, SOL Hot Yoga, Alterra Solar and Mynt, are hosting a Santa Cruz “Sun Day” Celebration.
I’m going as a volunteer and we’ll be at Mission Plaza Park from noon to 5 p.m. for a free community event with music, activities for kids, arts and crafts, demonstrations and info-shares about home solar, battery and heat pump technologies. Our goal is to engage and educate our community about the clean energy solutions that are still accessible, to make our community more resilient and less polluting.
