The Capitola Classic skateboard contest will take place Saturday in the old Sears building at the Capitola Mall. It's free for spectators and participants.

So, what else are you going to do with a long-abandoned former Sears department store? You might as well skate.

On Saturday, inside the former Sears at the Capitola Mall, skateboarders and skate fans will gather for the Capitola Classic skateboard contest, hosted by Santa Cruz Boardroom and presented by Santa Cruz Apparel, with a $1,000 prize for street skating and a $500 prize for Game of Skate.

The event will feature live music and food trucks, and will be free for both participants and spectators. Doors open at 9 a.m., and free registration begins at 10 a.m. The event will also feature a raffle to raise money for the Santa Cruz Animal Shelter.
