Property development

  • The Santa Cruz County Planning Department has formally approved a zoning application for a project at 84 Sunset Drive as of December 29. The approved project renews a permit for a one-bedroom vacation rental within an existing single-family home, allowing overnight stays of up to 30 days at a time. This renewal extends the permit’s expiration date from December 15, 2025, to December 15, 203. The property is located on the west side of Sunset Drive, approximately .3 miles from the intersection with Shell Road, in the San Andreas Planning Area. (view application)
     

Roadwork is affecting traffic in the region

  • South Highway 9 at Lorenzo Avenue in San Lorenzo Valley has one lane closed for emergency work. Traffic is being controlled in one direction at a time. This is expected to last until April 1.
     
  • The southbound Highway 1 State Park Avenue off-ramp in Santa Cruz County (Eastside / Live Oak) will be fully closed for soundwall construction starting Monday, January 26 at 9:00 p.m. The closure will last until February 10.
     

Community crime report

  • A person was stopped for a traffic violation and found with an open container of marijuana and a piece of aluminum foil containing a suspected crystal substance. They were arrested for having a controlled substance with previous offenses, having illegal paraphernalia, and having a narcotic controlled substance. The incident happened near E Front St. & Union St., Watsonville at 1 a.m. on January 16. (source)
     
  • A person violated a restraining order by speaking to the protected individual, which is considered contempt of court. This happened near the 100 Block of Second St., Watsonville, in front of the Santa Cruz County Courthouse. The incident took place at 11 a.m. on January 20. The person was not found at the time.   • A person was arrested for being drunk in public and causing a disturbance. The incident happened near the 100 Block of E Beach St. in Watsonville. It occurred at 10 p.m. on January 20. (source)
