I write in strong support of Rep. Jimmy Panetta, who has been unfairly characterized by some recent op-ed writers as advocating for war in the Middle East. This claim is not only misleading, but it also misrepresents a record of thoughtful and measured leadership.

Congressman Panetta has, in fact, been an outspoken critic of President Trump’s unilateral attack on Iran, emphasizing the constitutional necessity of consulting the United States Congress before engaging in acts that could draw our nation into conflict. His position reflects a commitment to democratic process, accountability and careful deliberation – values that should be at the core of any decision involving military action.

At the same time, Rep. Panetta has demonstrated moral clarity in condemning Iran’s brutality against its own people, as well as its destabilizing and malign behavior throughout the Middle East. Recognizing both the dangers posed by the Iranian regime and the importance of measured, lawful responses is not warmongering – it is responsible governance.

Here on the Central California coast, we are fortunate to be represented by a leader who consistently approaches complex issues with nuance, integrity, and a deep sense of duty to his constituents. From affordability and housing to healthcare, immigration and foreign policy, Congressman Panetta has been on the right side of the issues that matter most to our community.

In a time when rhetoric too often replaces reason, Congressman Panetta’s steady and principled leadership deserves recognition – not distortion.
