The family and friends of the late Mike Rotkin are now raising funds for several memorials and a gathering to celebrate his life and legacy.

Rotkin was a progressive activist with a long history in Santa Cruz. A UC Santa Cruz lecturer, he spent nearly 25 years on the city council and served five stints as mayor of Santa Cruz.

Rotkin died last Wednesday at the age of 79.

Rotkin’s family and friends began a fundraiser on GoFundMe three days ago and had received close to a quarter of their $20,000 goal by midday Monday.

According to the fundraiser’s description, donations will be used to put up a memorial bench on West Cliff Drive and tribute picnic tables in Santa Cruz state parks. Donations will also help fund a celebration-of-life gathering later this year.

In honor of Rotkin’s legacy and local impact, Lookout invites readers to share their experiences with him. For more information on where to send your tributes and memories, see here.
